To most West Australians it is “Rotto” – their very own, magical, holiday island, “overseas”, at home…within eyesight of Perth.
To indigenous West Australians it is Wadjemup – a place of exile, imprisonment, premature death. The island’s 19th & early 20th century history is more monumentally unjust & tragic than Alcatraz’s.

All but one of this post’s photos were taken on a single midwinter day. This is when relatively few flowers bloom…but it is prime time for Pterostylis – the orchid genus more commonly known as Greenhoods.

All but one of the photos in this post were taken yesterday on a brief, late afternoon walk around our local lake. It is just a few minutes’ drive – or less than an hour’s walk – from the heart of Perth’s CBD.

Not yet on many visitors’ “radar” is Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens’ very different but equally rewarding “other half”, 45 kilometres southeast of the CBD.

Thanks to Sir Peter Jackson, many millions more human eyes have looked at this active volcano than have human feet walked anywhere near it. Most who “know” it via The Lord of the Rings trilogy do not even know its real name.

Stand atop its higher hills/dunes and you see that suburbia surrounds this bush “island”. Down in its “valleys”, however, your eyes certainly don’t tell you that Bold Park is within an urban area of more than two million people, and that the CBD is only minutes away.
