Pelican Yoga wishes you all a happy and safe festive season.
You may imagine that the pictured “decorations” involve snow and ice, either directly or as inspiration source, and that they express nostalgia for – or romantic notions about – the “properly Christmassy” Decembers of Santa’s homeland, deep in the northern hemisphere.
If so, you would be wrong on all counts!
My photo, taken in Fremantle’s Old Customs House on 27 November this year, shows part of an artwork which references – and in part replicates – what occurs in many Australian lakes.
Most of Australia’s non-artificial lakes – including all of the very big ones – are “salt lakes”.
Rainwater – directly falling, and/or delivered by ephemerally-flowing watercourses – only briefly sits within them.
Very high rates of evaporation rapidly remove this water; as that occurs, the remaining “standing” water in such lakes becomes progressively more hypersaline.
Exquisite crystals can form…and the lake can become pink.
