Teals, Lake Monger

The pictured birds are teals.

These very common dabbling ducks are no less lovely for being “common”.

Probably, this post’s heroines are grey teals, but they just might be chestnut teals, or hybrids.

Photo is copyright Doug Spencer, taken on north-western side of Lake Monger at 4.09 pm on 14 August 2023.

The particular location is a good example of successful rehabilitation effort.

A few years ago the pictured spot was just a section of lakeside lawn which became soggy/boggy in wet winters; it has now become an appropriately vegetated, very productive seasonal wetland.

In wet winters, this area, adjacent to the edge of the lake-proper, is a Lake Monger Reserve “hotspot” for birds…and birders.
