“Old city”, Lahore (#12 in series: daily life)

Perchance you are wondering why the featured image’s little girl in the white dress looks familiar…we had encountered her one hour earlier, in a courtyard.

There, she had danced – not as a “performance” – but spontaneously, as pictured in this series’ chapter #4.

Lahore is one of the world’s hottest and most polluted cities.

However, on the morning of 12 May 2024 the air was surprisingly “fresh”,  temperature atypically moderate, and there were puddles in streets.

These were all thanks to the violent storm that had suddenly thundered in, overnight.

On the previous night that storm had made our rooftop terrace dinner an unexpectedly dramatic experience.

Suddenly, glasses were shattering and flying, lights went out, and we (and a few hundred other diners) made a hasty exit, down many flights of a dark stairwell.

A generator quickly “kicked in”, the stairs became no longer-dark,  but we opted not to try our luck with the lift!

The aftermath, however, was delightfully refreshing. (and the general “power cut” proved surprisingly brief)

”The morning after” was perfect for pedestrians.

The foreign tourists visible in the photos below are fellow members of our group; during seven fascinating hours in the “old city” we saw thousands of fellow humans, but absolutely no other “Western” tourists.

Next, we begin our “exploration” of the walled city’s treasures.

Wazir Khan mosque is one of them.
