Popularly known as “the palace of mirrors”, the Sheesh Mahal is the most opulent of Lahore Fort’s “notable monuments”.
It sits directly above the summer palace, in Lahore Fort’s northwestern corner.
The Sheesh Mahal’s glittering splendour is only visible from within what was originally a very “restricted” section of Lahore Fort.
This ornate pavilion/palace was constructed in the 17th century CE, for the exclusive use/pleasure of the imperial family. (plus their invited guests and closest aides)
Since its 21st century restoration, the Sheesh Mahal has become tourists’ “must visit”/most-visited site within Lahore Fort.
Sheesh Mahal, in Urdu language, literally means ‘Crystal Palace’. However, with its pietra dura decorations[2] and intricate mirror-work inlaid into the white marble walls and ceilings creating gleaming effect,[3] the lavish room has come to be known as ‘Palace of Mirrors’, and sometimes the ‘Hall of Mirrors’. Similar halls are also found in the contemporary palace of the Agra Fort, and show influence on the later additions to Amber Fort.
