Not native, not wild…but beautiful (with musical bonus)

As Pelican Yoga regulars already know, I generally prefer wild places, wild animals and plants, untamed, “in the wild”/ au naturel.

That said, I would never wish to forgo the pleasures afforded by exotic plants, as cultivated in both “Botanic” and domestic gardens.

This afternoon, for instance, after walking around Lake Claremont…

(en route to and fro the lake, we wryly observed the annual array of enthusiastic, placard-waving local folks offering “all day parking” for $20 + to those silly enough to drive to the nearby Perth Royal Show)

At 4.30 pm, as the sun briefly emerged, it highlighted a beautiful array of hibiscus in front of one house.

83 years earlier, in 1939, Billy Strayhorn composed one of the loveliest flower songs.

He wrote it expressly for alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges.

This is Hodges’ 1964 version, from the album Everybody Knows Johnny Hodges.

Musically speaking, the world would be a better place if the album title’s claim were true!

Jimmy Jones is pianist, Grady Tate plays drums and Richard Davis is the discreetly superb bassist.
