October 30 2023: Darling Range flora, “up close” (#14 in series, with musical bonus & Australian tour alert)

One of the nigh-infinite pleasures of walking in southwestern Australian forest/woodland/bush:

once “attuned”, you begin to notice that the “forest floor” – when viewed at or near ground level, up close – often looks like a multi-layered, uncommonly-colourful “forest”, in its own right.

Photo is copyright Doug Spencer, taken at 10.31 am, 30 October 2023 in wandoo woodland, circa 100 kilometres southeast of Perth CBD.

The providers of this post’s mauve-purple colour are one of fifty members of the genus Thysanotus, known as “fringe lilies”.

Some future chapters of this series will pay this genus closer attention.

Musical bonus/Australian tour alert

The performance is a single take, “live” in the open air, in a forest, in June 2022

That forest is one in which guitarist Derek Gripper likes to walk, in his home city – Cape Town.

Derek is one of the world’s most remarkable guitarists, and – speaking from experience – his concerts are unforgettable.

In January & February 2024 Derek will be able to experience Australian forests, in all mainland States, plus the ACT.

His concert schedule is much wider-reaching than are most so-called “Australia-wide” tours.  (yours truly looks forward to his Albany concert on 13 February)

If he reaches a stage anywhere near you, you ought book a seat in front of it!
