Reading the signs (in northern Namibia. #3 in series)

Well inland in northern Namibia, fish shops are “astonishingly” common.

As with shebeens, most of them greatly resemble most of them.

This one’s sign, however, proudly denies this reality.

Northern Namibia is not the “fish & chips capital of the world”.

Its fish shops are mostly selling fish – fish, only – and they are not cooking it.

Their customers may be buying it as “fresh” fish, but most of them will then smoke or dry it; throughout Southern Africa dried or smoked fish is a staple source of protein, often eaten by people who do not have regular access to refrigeration.
